“This juice tastes so good, it’s like biting into an apple!”
Gizdich Ranch apple juice, which was awarded first place at the Santa Cruz County Fair, is pure apple juice. It’s natural, unfiltered and unpasteurized, and is free of additives and preservatives.
“We like to say that there’s absolutely nothing added, except our name,” said Vince Gizdich, a third-generation farmer and owner of Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville, Calif.
Gizdich apple juice made of a blend of apples, with the primary variety being a Newtown Pippin. The Pippin has a sharp, tart flavor, which is balanced by the addition of other apple varieties, which Vince refers to as ‘sugar apples.’
“We try to regulate the flavor as much as we can to keep it consistent through the season as the apple flavors change,” said Vince. “Early in the season we add in more sugar apples, usually a combination of Winesap, Macoun or Empire, because the flavor of the Pippin isn’t as powerful as it is later in the season. We’re careful to keep the juice flavor just right: not too sweet and not too sharp.”
Vince suggests using the raw, natural juice for making your own sweet sparkling cider, warm spiced apple cider (recipe below) or even apple cider vinegar. You can also use it in recipes featuring apples, such as our recipe for Pork Chops with Apples and Sage.
