Fresh and Refreshing Organic Fuji Apples from the Albano Family

The Albanos Family is famous for their Fuji apples – and year after year we agree, these apples are noteworthy.

The Albano Family’s Orchard

Howard Albano grows organic Fuji apples in his orchard outside of Santa Barbara. Surrounded by the Las Padres National Forest, he realized that his situation was ideal or switching to organic, as the forest provides a buffer from both pesticides and GMO contamination. He also cites the local climate as being particularly well suited for apples, especially the Fuji. Howard runs his business with the help of his wife, Jean and son, Byron.

Fuji Apples

Fuji apples, although only introduced into the U.S. in the 1980s have grown to become a customer favorite, and understandably so. They are a cross between Red Delicious and Ralls Genet varieties, resulting in a remarkably sweet, crisp, and juicy apple. Fujis are one of the last sweet apples to ripen, and they hold their sugar better than most others, making them a fine choice all year round. But they are at their best right now.

Enjoying Fuji Apples

An all-purpose apple, the Fuji is equally enjoyable fresh or cooked. I like these apples because they are organic, sweeter than the typical Washington apple and have a short, 4-week season. Fans are quick to point out that Fuji apples make a wonderful applesauce, one that you don’t have to sweeten with sugar.

My personal favorite it to eat it sliced with a little St. Agur Blue Cheese. I also love it sliced up in Wallaby plain organic yogurt for a high protein, fiber, antioxidant, and vitamin loaded breakfast!
