Tips for Healthy Living: Pillar 3

I’m a bit of a health nut. It’s probably obvious to most of you by now! In addition to eating healthy, I try to get to the gym every day and keep up on health & fitness news. For example, the June 2009 issue of Life Extension magazine featured an article titled, “The Nine Pillars of Successful Weight Loss” which I’d like to summarize and share with you. Pillar 3: Control Rate of Carbohydrate Absorption

You may know that too much blood glucose (and the subsequent insulin spike) predisposes people to gaining unwanted fat pounds. Replacing particular carb-heavy items with fiber-rich foods can significantly blunt the glucose-insulin surge.

The most common tip to bump up fiber is to eat fruits or vegetables raw, rather than just drinking the juice or putting it in a soup. Also, almonds, peanuts, dried fruits (apricots, dates, prunes, raisins) are high in fiber.
