Apple Season Is Here
And it’s true: apples really do help keep the doctor away!
By Dr. Douglas Husbands
You’ve heard the old saying that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” so now that apples are coming into season, let’s look at some evidence to support that saying.
Apples are loaded with a type of fiber that’s very beneficial to our bodies. The fiber in apples helps fill you up faster, thereby helping you feel satisfied instead of craving more sustenance. Since they are low in calories, you can eat a lot of apples without consuming too much energy, thereby helping with weight loss and management.
Apples are also a delicious way to help maintain regular bowel movements due to the type of fiber in apples. Regular bowel movements are one of the major ways our bodies remove toxins from our system.
What’s more is that since apples do not raise our blood sugar levels very highly or rapidly, they help keep our energy levels stable while providing healthy nutrients.
Another positive benefit of eating apples is the high water content. The consumption of apples and other fruits with a high water content, such as melons, help us take in more water. Many times people feel hungry when they’re actually thirsty. So the high water content and fiber contribute to satisfying our hunger as well as help keeping us hydrated.
So, regarding apples: Eat up and enjoy!
