What is KonaRed
Did you know the coffee bean as we know it is really the seed of a red berry-type fruit? This red fruit, historically a disregarded byproduct, was recently discovered by the University of Hawaii to have super energy and antioxidant properties…in fact, it has 15 times the amount of acai berry and 25 times the amount of pomegranate fruit! (More stats.)
It was in 2008 that Kauai, Hawaii, resident Shaun Roberts, CEO and co-founder of KonaRed, heard the news, gathered samples from local coffee growers and went to work in the lab to study the full benefits of the fruit.
After months of perfecting extraction and running tests in a U.S. lab, KonaRed was discovered to have fantastic levels of polyphenols (antioxidants) with protective benefits to help us prevent disease, resist sun damage, delay aging (by neutralizing free radicals) and more.
Three antioxidants found in KonaRed:
- Quinic Acid (anti-viral: an immune booster)
- Chlorogenic Acid (appetite suppressant: speaks for itself)
- Ferulic Acid (anti-inflammatory: have gout or arthritis? You know anti-inflammatory will help you feel better!)
Fast-Acting Energy You Can Feel Good About
KonaRed is also highly bioavailable, meaning the antioxidants are quickly and highly absorbed into cellular system where they do their best work. Plus, who couldn’t use a great-tasting wellness drink that actually works quickly and doesn’t leave you shaky in just a half hour? KonaRed is fast acting, nutritious and provides long-lasting energy.
“I hear from companies with new superfruit drinks claiming to be this or that all the time, but KonaRed actually delivers,” said John Nava, specialty foods buyer for Sigona’s. “Some of the drinks do have good antioxidant levels, but don’t have good taste. KonaRed blows others out of the water with flavor and with health.”
KonaRed is not as tart as pomegranate juice – it’s more unique, sort of a combination of strawberry, prune and pomegranate. On its own, the fruit extract flavor is powerful, so the KonaRed team mixes the ready-to-drink juice with apple and pineapple concentrate.
The red coffee fruit – it looks like cranberry – is a protective coat for the coffee bean, much the same an orange or banana peel protects the edible fruit within. The red fruit not only protects, but it nourishes the bean. While it protects the bean from the sun, the fruit develops antioxidants – more antioxidants than any other fruit in the world!
What’s more is the fruit used for KonaRed is all exclusively from coffee farms on the island of Kona, Hawaii, and is closely followed from field-to-bottle every step of the way. This great new product is traceable, sustainable, innovative and super nutritious all in one bottle!
David Hegsted, the sales manager, suggests mixing KonaRed in smoothies, stirring a little into oatmeal or using it as a mixer for cocktails. Let us know how else you use KonaRed and we’ll share the recipe on our blog!

UPDATE: Some of you have asked about the caffeine content in KonaRed. The short answer is yes, it does have a little bit of caffeine. David Hegsted, the sales rep, provides the technical information: “KonaRed has 27 mg of caffeine per serving, about half of what a traditional candy bar has (because chocolate has natural caffeine). This is natural caffeine and is not added. It’s also 75% less than a cup of coffee.”
